Spinal Instability

ALSO CALLED “LUMBAR SPONDYLOLISTHESIS”

Spondylolisthesis occurs when one vertebra slips forward, backward, or laterally relative to the one above or below it, putting pressure on the spinal nerves. For adults 30 years old and older, spondylolisthesis is a fairly common cause of lower back pain and pain or weakness in the legs. Degenerative spondylolisthesis, which occurs when the bones, joints, and ligaments in the spine weaken due to aging, is a fairly common cause of pain or weakness in adults over 50.

SYMPTOMS

This misalignment of the slipped vertebra puts pressure on the spinal canal and can cause back pain, difficulty walking or standing, and leg weakness.

Treatment is dependent on the cause of the spinal instability and can range from rest to surgery.
